Santa brought me a photographic gift I’ve been hankering after for ages yesterday – a B+H 10 stop neutral density filter. I realised the perfect combination of good weather, high tide and sunset was going to occur simultaneously in Bosham this afternoon so I needed no further encouragement to go and try out my new gadget! I started off on one side of the water, shooting towards the centre of the village, but gave up after a while as my tripod kept sinking into the mud, blurring my long exposures. Instead I headed across the water to the quayside and aimed my camera in the opposite direction. As I was finishing up the sun began to sink lower and my second shot was one of those where I immediately knew I’d got something good. It was very much a case of trial and error to work out the exposures (although I did have an iPhone app to help me work out the maths!) but I just love the milky effect it creates in the water. I’m also looking forward to using it for architectural photography as it will allow me to photograph my favourite buidings using super long exposures to stop people registering on the sensor. I can see hours of fun ahead of me!
