I suppose it was inevitable that I would use a recorder for today’s ‘pipes’ theme but I wasn’t going to let that stop me! This is my Ganassi recorder, a copy of an instrument from around 1535, which I use to play renaissance solo music. It produces the most wonderfully fruity sound and I just adore in the patterns in the grain of the wood. If you’re wondering about the title of this post it’s a reference to one of the recorder’s alternative names. In Germany it’s called a Blockflöte (literally a block flute), in France a Flute à Bec (flute with a beak) but in Italy it’s the Flauto Dolce – the sweet flute.
