Wells Cathedral

The Cathedral's magificent scissor arches. Click to enlarge for the full sense of awe!

Steps to the Chapter House
One of the Cathedral's many faces. I found this chap in the choir stalls.
The imposing west front.
On my way to Cheddar today I stopped off in Wells to have a look around the Cathedral. It’s a building I’ve wanted to visit for a long while and I wasn’t disappointed. It has the most amazing scissor arches which were built between 1338 and 1348 to support a collapsing tower. They’re such a striking shape that it’s easy to assume they’re a much more modern addition to the cathedral. In many ways Wells reminds me of Beverley Minster, particularly with the number of faces carved into the stonework – everywhere you look there are faces peering down at you. Another highlight was the ascent to the Chapter House where you can clearly see how centuries of feet have worn the stone steps away. I to wait patiently for a clear shot but it was worth it. The first two shots I’ve posted here were both taken either sitting or lying in the centre of the nave – luckily it was quiet so no one saw me. I wasn’t sure if tripods were allowed in the Cathedral so I sneaked my gorillapod in and set it up on the floor. I did try to capture the ceiling sitting down but it was just so much easier to get everything lined up when I was lying flat on the floor!

iPhoneElorac I love this Cathedral. I came out with a stiff neck last time. It is an amazing place.
Wonderful photographs. I particularly love those worn steps. I was entranced by them when I went, so many years ago now and I didn't have a CAMERA!?!

Jarvo Magnificent set. I really like number 2 for its abstract qualities, but I think the one of the chapter house steps is the most impressive.
