Taking terns

Apologies for the pun – I couldn’t resist! After a spot of retail therapy in Portsmouth this morning I headed home along the sea front and stopped off in search of today’s photo. The strength of the wind came as something of a surprise when I got out of the car and I rapidly lost the will to fight my way onto the beach with my camera. About the only thing moving nearby were a couple of foolhardy cyclists and some sea birds, some of which posed for my cameras I sat in the car with the window open. I’d always assumed these birds were terns but, having just done some research, I think they’re actually black-headed gulls which, of course, makes a complete nonsense of my title for this post!
lookagain Haha....that's so cute the way they're lined up looking in the same direction....makes me smile :))) You came up with a great title for this shot!

Annbramwell Don't worry, we could pretend that they are terns, I am sure they don't care one way or the other...! excellent photo, you get the impression that it is blustery and unpleasant just by the way they are standing looking all dejected, I think you were probably wise to stay in the car...!

josy63 · 2011-07-08: 11:55
beth0110 maybe they are taking turns with the terns standing still against the wind???? lol love that you didn't change the title after your research.

SheriJ · 2011-07-08: 12:57
revenant Shouldn't that be "talking out of tern"?
revenant · 2011-07-08: 13:01
revenant Sorry, that's what I do.
revenant · 2011-07-08: 13:01
davids Well I suppose it was your tern for a bad pun...
davids · 2011-07-08: 15:18
danrav Regardless of the accuracy of the title, it is a great shot Helen! They are showing off their aerodynamic profiles for us on PB. Thank you for not "terning" Helen away by not posing for her! Who's tern is it now to get into the act????
danrav · 2011-07-08: 16:17
stevetherecorder Sure they're not brown-headed gulls? "Brown gulls in the ring, la la la la la"!!
stevetherecorder · 2011-07-08: 17:02
????? Well, as long as the tides didn't tern! Great shot!
