I really thought I was going to fail on today’s mural theme but then I remembered these paintings in the south transept of Chichester Cathedral. As they’re painted on wooden panels rather than directly onto the walls I guess a purist would argue that, strictly speaking, they’re not murals. However, they’ve been there since the 16th century so I would say they’re pretty much a permanent part of the building. These portraits were painted by Lambert Barnard, who was court painter to Bishop Sherburne between 1508 and 1536. They are supposed to depict the Bishops of Chichester, from St. Wilfrid through to Bishop Sherburne, although if you look closely they all feature the same face shown from different angles!
