As I drove round behind the Goodwood Motor Circuit this morning I noticed there was some action on track and decided to stop off and take a look. As I walked over to the pitlane a vast, roaring leviathan of a car appeared and paused briefly before heading out onto the track. With the prospect of seeing this huge car being hustled around the circuit I legged it over to the chicane and waited quite some time before it arrived. By this stage it was raining fairly heavily and the driver was having to work quite hard to keep it on the track. After a few laps it came back into the paddock and we all got a closer look. It turned out to be an early twentieth century LaFrance car, with a fifteen litre engine. The owner told us that it weighs in at 3 tonnes, with the engine alone accounting for a third of that weight. I can’t begin to imagine how much fuel it must gobble up but you’ve got to admire the bravery/madness (delete as you feel applicable) of its owner to drive it around Goodwood in the pouring rain!
