Family time

This cute little fellow was one of about six water voles we saw going about their business during our boat trip this morning.

Why did the Water Vole cross the river? To get to the reeds on the other side of course!

A Little Grebe and its one surviving young. There were three babies originally but the other two sadly didn't survive the flooding last Monday.

This younger Trumpeter Swan was born on 30th May.

A family of Swallows have taken up residence inside one of the Centre's hides. Mum and Dad came in and out several times while we were there and didn't seem in the least bit bothered by our presence.

A Marbled Teal. These ducks were once indigenous to the Mesopotamian Marshes in Iraq. After the first Gulf War Saddam Hussain had the marshes drained to punish the local tribes and these beautiful birds almost died out. However, in recent years the marshes have been reinstated and they are now thriving again.

While I was at the Arundel Wetlands Centre yesterday I noticed a poster advertising an early morning ‘Birds and Boats’ event for today. The weather forecast was good so I went along for what was supposed to be an extended, 40 minute, ride in the Wetland Discovery Boat followed by a 40 minute guided tour of the centre on foot. As it happened Clive, our guide, was incredibly generous and gave us about three and a half hours of his time! Being out on the water 90 minutes before the Centre’s usual opening time was wonderful – the water voles were very active and at several points during our 90 minute boat ride we encountered a Little Grebe and its month old baby. Everywhere you looked around the Centre there were flourishing families and during our guided tour we encountered a young Trumpeter Swan, countless ducklings and even a swallow’s nest inside one of the hides.

Fantastic shots... that vole is adorable... I have never had the privilege of seeing one of these little chaps in the wild... all the babies are very cute!

You spot the loveliest and most interesting creatures, Helen....and then you have the skill to capture excellent images of them. Beautiful post!
