Hot and steamy

I was pleased that I managed to capture some of the movement in these cogs. Just seconds before it had let off steam very noisily and I'd almost jumped out of my skin!

I dread to think how much oil these beasts must drink....

There were lots of hot dogs there today. This youngster was very pleased to pose for me and rolled over onto her back for a tummy rub afterwards!

An interior shot of the carpenter's shed. It would seem that a carpenter can never have too many tools!

This chap was creating wooden pegs which will be used to hold the tiles on the roof of a new (old) cottage they're going to be reconstructing on site during September and October. He's made about 1000 of them so far - only another 4000 to go! He was kind enough to let me try my hand at chopping the pegs and even let me take on home as a souvenir!

An enormous steam engine wheel - it must have been taller than I am!

Several of these steamy leviathans resting up after lunch.

The last couple of days have seen the UK roasting in temperatures which are more normally found in continental Europe. With the prospect of another sunny day today I decided to go and get even hotter and steamier at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum where they were holding their annual steam fair. The Museum is home to about fifty old buildings, rescued from certain destruction from all over the south east of England and reconstructed on site. Most of the steam machines were together in a field at one end of the site but periodically a miniature steam engine would trundle by as I walked around, usually pulling a cargo of people which looked far too big for the size of the machine. For a while it looked like we might get a thunderstorm (there were loud rumbles of thunder emanating from the other side of the hill for an hour or so) but in the end the weather headed away from the site and we were just left with the gentle rumblings and parpings of the many steam machines.

Jarvo Wonderful set Helen, just made for B&W. Love the sense of movement in #2, but for me that action portrait (#3) is the stand out shot.
