Online Communities for ELT and Professional Development

2008.10.03
The hotel location (downtown) turned out to be perfect for many of those attending. And the conference room was quite spacious! :-)

3:45 PM: time to get started... Buterflies in the stomach... and off we go!

Raise your hands if you agree! ;-)

After my presentation, I had the chance to share a coffee with wonderful Rita Zeinstijer, a Webhead from Rosario, Argentina. Great!

Valeria Virga(valeriavirga@yahoo.com.ar) (from Rosario) talked about online dictionaries... Interesting! Some links to explore in future: Yourdictionary.com, and Visuwords.

Rita Zeinstejer (also from Rosario) shared her inspiring experience integrating blogs, wikis, podcasts and a lot more into her CAE course during 2008, everything based at a Ning community. Superb!!!!!! Some tools I must look into ASAP: Glogster (poster making), Animoto (video making) and International Writing Exchange. It'd take me a lifetime to learn all this incredible Webhead has to share! Kudos to you, Rita!

A lucky few "flocking together" around a laptop... following the links in real time due to the Wi-fi connection! I was green with envy!

After lunch, Marina Cantarutti helped us explore Web 2.0 applications that can be used to recreate f2f educational experiences. Her presentation was clearly organised, showed her expertise and knowledge of the reality of the classroom, and tipped me on so many tools I'd never heard of before, that I can only say THANKS, MARINA! A few things to go over in future: Dimdim (webmeeting), Udutu and Eduslide (for creating online courses), Palabea (social networking for language learning) and Selfcast (for broadcasting oneself live).

As we got to the end of the conference, Claudia Ceraso discussed wiki-based peer reviews in the writing class. The impressive work carried out by her FCE students under her lead, and her careful, enlightening reflection upon the process were definitely worth following attentively... Now it's time to go to the online version of her presentation and share comments! What a pleasure to have finally had the chance to meet Claudia f2f after years of "virtual friendship". Claudia: you turned out to be all the great things I'd heard about you and more! Let's hope we can chat over a cup of coffee together soon!

4 Argentinian Webheads (and Learning with Computers members) together: a memorable moment indeed!
From left to right: Marina Cantaruti (BA), Gladys Baya (BA), Rita Zeinstejer (Rosario) and Claudia Ceraso (BA).
Hooray!

The speakers who made it at the closing ceremony. From left to right: Marina Cantaruti, Gladys Baya, Rita Zeinstejer, Veronica de la Encina, Claudia Ceraso and Ana Ma. Rozi de Bergel.

And, finally, the six of us together with Carlos Galizzi, the conference organizer. Time for us all to go home and enjoy a job well done!

Presentation during the "First Internet Wise Conference for Teachers of English" on October 03, 2008.

Rita Zeinstejer It was certainly a most enjoyable experience, not only because of the expertise of most of the speakers, the high quality of the talks, and the warm, friendly atmosphere created by its organizer, Carlos Galizzi, but because FOUR Argentinian Webheads got together and met f2f !

????? Dear ladies,
I was so pleasantly surprised by this f2f meeting! I'm sure you had a wonderful time! When Webheads meet, there are very warm hugs and non-stop talk and laughs!
Congrats on the great work presented! Gladys, I also have to look into some of these tools. Maybe we can get together online to do it together.
Beijinhos all,
Teresa

Michael Coghlan Great photos thank you! There seems to be a distinct lack of males in the audience at this event. Is there only one male teaching English in Argentina? :)
Michael Coghlan · 2008-10-06: 05:57
Ana María Bergel Great pictures, great venue, great audience, great speakers. The most useful conference I have attended this year. It was a pleasure to share "the stage" with such well-informed, professional, knowledgeable and charming colleagues. I had a great time. Thanks, Wise.

Carlos Galizzi It was such a wonderful time! After the effort of putting the Conference together, I still have a rewarding mix of feelings: Gratitude, satisfaction, pride, joy and profound fullfillment. Our mission at Wise is to bring to teachers, Teacher Development Events with good academic standards, I hope we achieved our mission as for the organization, No doubt, the speakers have achieved theirs, for they have excelled as Professionals and Human Beings.

I kindly invite the member of this community to join us next year!

We are usually open to ideas as to promote good quality F2F events.

Words cannot really express what I feel right now!

Lilia This was the most amazing convention I have ever attended, and I can assure you I have attended many of them during the 15 years of teaching experience...
I have to confess now: I'M A WEBHEAD!! I feel so identified with each of the speakers' realities. They showed me that everything I imagined of e-teaching was possible.
Excellent talks, very appealing lecturers, pretty neat presentations.
A paragraph apart for Carlos and his assistants as the organization of the event was perfect, and their attentive look at our needs was essential.
Luckily, I was one of the winners of the free passes for next year's convention. So see you all there again!!!
Thanks a lot!!
