Mystic theme - all about the time.

GdaÅ„sk Shipyard was founded in 1945 as a state-owned company, on sites of the former German shipyards, Schichau-Werft and Danziger Werft, both considerably damaged in the Second World War.[1] On 1 July 1952 a state-owned enterprise called Baza Remontowa – Ostrow was established on Ostrow Island. The name changed to Gdanska Stocznia Remontowa later in the year.[2] During the time of the People's Republic of Poland, the complex was known as the Gdansk Shipyard and Vladimir Lenin Shipyard in GdaÅ„sk (1967-89).
In 1980 Gdańsk was the arena for events that changed the face of the world. A strike by 17,000 ship builders saw Solidarity (Solidarność), led by shipyard electrician Lech Wałęsa, recognised as the first non-communist trade union in the then Soviet Bloc. The move was one of the first successful steps in a campaign of civil resistance that contributed to the eventual collapse of communism across eastern Europe.[4][5]
These pictures were made at the end of 2010. My well known shipyard and houses for workers looked very sad and ruined. Now, before EURO 2012 they destroyed all these workers houses which were built many years ago and can be treated as monuments. My pictures are historical now. I lived near these places for many years, I can see shipyard from windows of my flat, I ‘ve seen workers going there at 7 o’ clock every morning. Now – there is NOTHING and nearly NOBODY!

marilynx Thankyou for the history... it's always far more interesting to learn straight from
the horse's mouth!
A desolate iamge, but one for posterity

camilleauteuil Everybody remembers Walesa and Solidarnosc. The buildings are destroyed, the workers left. But what they made a success is always here.
Moving photos ...

danrav A wonderful set with history and great first hand experience. #5 to my faves. It reminds me so much of the factories I worked in when younger. Walesa - a hero indeed!!!

ArtBee What an interesting story behind these images! It does look deserted and all that graffiti seals it's fate. It is the same in many places here too. Once thriving factories are now empty shells that stand only as reminders of days gone by. Well done for the theme Maggie!

lookagain An interesting story and a wonderfully put together post for the theme, Maggie! So good there are cameras and photographers like you who can capture this history before it is gone....before time takes it away.
