Early morning in the Muong Hoa Valley
dewy and fresh with a slight haze and crisp air |
The family we're staying with are Dao people also known as Mien
Here the son is grating "cassava root" for use as the main ingredient in pig's meal. After grading all you see here (and more), he will spread it out over the concrete, allowing it to dry before sweeping up and adding it with other parts (along with the few scraps left from the kitchen that the dog's don't eat) |
Finished product
Yum "It tastes as good as it smells!" -pig |
some neighbors come by to chat...
|
The style of the Dao woman with their shaved head and red head dress....

Back on the bike
I really love the land around Ban Ho so I go out to take more in |
Went without using the map today-
Just a compass and intuition steering us down through the hills |
the\ yard into a tiny communtiy on the back side of a mountain
It felt very comfortable here... some ducks, chickens, and children running about |
... Before they kept yelling "hello" and hiding ("hello" seems to be known by everyone no mater how 'out of the way' they may be) but, as soon as one child was curious enough to approach the foreigners
and was rewarded with raw peanuts, all the kids with in ear shot came running... |
I had to post a few of these...
I'm sure you see why* |
After taking the picture remember to show your model
The kids get so excited at seeing themselves on "TV" |
Back on the road
(see the evidence of land slides in the background) |
another unmapped town I never got the name of
|
now this is a land slide-
a serious and common problem not only for this region, but for every mountainous area of Asia I experienced |
That night we were invited to a dinner, and then to a yearly education celebration at the community's school
Public speakers, dancers, music, all that~ |
(Thanks for snapping this)
Passed out with one of the family's puppies |
