Not much of a start, but I have to start somewhere - so why not start by playing with the camera and seeing what happens?
Anyway, the first picture is of the plume of steam coming from the sugar refinery on the banks of the River Ouse north of York, viewed across a public school rugby pitch just under a mile away. (ISO 400, f5.6, 1/1000 - and if you think I'm being geeky by putting those numbers there, you're right.)
I took several pictures of this view with different apertures and speeds, but liked this one the most.
The second picture is the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, waiting for the tide to go out so we could drive across the causeway on a hot morning in July 2006 (ISO 200, f16.0, 1/500.) Darling Wifey filtered this through Adobe Photoshop and printed out an 8x12 black and white copy of it, and it looks spectacular.
