The River Ouse had broken its banks about a week before I took this photograph and the water level had been receding slowly, so I was squatting in two inches of wet silt to take the picture (ISO 400, f5.6 1/1000.) It wasn't uncomfortable, but it was very slippy - which explains why I had a wet backside when I made it home.
When the water level is six feet above normal, as it is here, the whole mood of the embankment changes. Just a few yards way is a city centre crowded with Christmas shoppers, but here is tranquility and gentle rhythm.
