In the Glades: Day 1 of 3

2008.05.04
The palms at Everglades Station stand like a beacon to travelers.

The road to Chokoloskee, an island raised from sea-level by Native American shell mounds.

Sting ray jerky?

Looking towards Chokoloskee from the bridge where someone's always fishing.

Palms, some headless, are the skyscrapers here.

A beautiful spot to launch a canoe or get bit by a gigantic horse fly.

The piers where they launch tours of the Everglades for eco-tourists.

Three days is only enough time to scratch the very thick and grimy surface of the Everglades. The history itself would take a lifetime to understand, and the landscape is only fully understood by the old-timers who rarely venture to places you and I would go. Yes, there were tourists, plenty of Germans and pasty Brits stopping at roadside parks and swatting at the carniverous mosquitoes, but there were also locals - friendly, humble people - who have seen the changes brought on by the death of the fishing industry, and the funny stories spread by David Shealy, and those damn alligators - who seem to be the center of attention during travel season. The locals aren't scared of the alligators, but you should be.
