In the Glades: Day 2 of 3

2008.05.05

The little creatures of the Corkscrew - you have to really look to find them.

A signature prarie scene at the Corkscrew.

The boardwalk that seems to follow into oblivion.

The center of Ave Maria features this pious behemoth.

The strangler fig.

This was one of the first gators I saw on my short trip, and certainly the smallest.

A Florida banded water snake rests in a trailside palmetto frond.

A thatched refuge looks slightly weathered by passing hurricanes.

The pines of Kirby Storter.

A gator at H.P. Turner.

Emerald waters at a Marco Island boat ramp.

Day two was a constant traverse of the landscape and of the region. First, a trip north to the Corkscrew Swamp - passing through the migrant town of Immokalee with its bodegas and taquerias, and its Indian casino. Then on to Ave Maria, the fake town built by Catholics. Afterwards, a visit to Fakahatchee Strand boardwalk, and Kirby Storter, and H.P. Turner parks.
