On February 3 is the Japanese Setsubun-"seasonal division" festival .Setsubun marks the start of spring according to the Japanese Lunar calendar. For many centuries, the Japanese have performed rituals with the purpose of chasing away evil spirits at the start of spring.
In 13th century Japan during Setsubun homes were decorated with fish heads and tree branches to ward away evil spirits but in modern Japan, the smelly traditions have taken a side step and the fun and interactive rituals are more common.
The most common being the throwing of roasted soya beans around the house and at local temples and shrines.
To cleanse your home, open your windows and doors and start throwing the beans around your house, as you do shout "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" which translates to "Demons (or ogres, evil spirits) out! Happiness in!" With children it is common to wear Oni-n-men (demon masks) as you complete the ritual – it makes it more fun and gives the festival a Halloween feel. Afterwards you pick up and eat the number of beans which corresponds to your age plus an extra to ensure health, good luck and prosperity in the coming year.

Two great shots! And having a cat is "happiness in".
