Las Fallas De San Jose　　　　　　　　　　　(サンホセの火祭り)

The Fallas are enormous models made out of papier mache, wood and wax, and often characaturing Spanish social and political current affairs. The models are burnt on the night of 19 March in a festival of fire, fireworks and organized mayhem. Fireworks and firecrackers play a big role in any fiestas held in this region, and Fallas is no exception. Be careful of firecrackers being thrown along the street by youngsters. And be prepared for the ground to shake with the force of the fireworks display which begins at midnight.

スペイン三大祭りの一つ、サン･ホセの火祭りが地中海に臨む都バレンシアで華々しく催されます。これは街々の各広場を数百の張子人形で飾り付け、3月19日のサン･ホセの夜に全て焼き払ってしまう祭りです。
　サン・ホセとはスペイン語で聖ヨセフ、つまりイエス・キリストの父親のこと。職業が大工だったことから大工職人達の守護聖人として崇められています。昔からサン・ホセの日に古い材木や木屑などを集めて大きな焚き火をする習慣が大工達の間で受け継がれていましたが、ある日張子の人形を火の中に投げ入れたのが周囲の人々に面白がられ、それがきっかけとなり色々な人形が作られるようになりました。現在では1年も前から競って構想を練り、飾り付けも凝った風刺のきいたテーマが取り上げられるようになりました。｢ファヤ｣と呼ばれるこの人形は大小とりまぜて計600にのぼり、バレンシアの街々を埋め尽くします。
　毎夜午前零時には大規模な仕掛け花火が打ち上げられ人々は夜が白々と明ける頃まで飲み歩きます。最終日19日のサン･ホセの夜には小さなファヤから次々と火がつけられ、20日午前１時にバレンシア広場の巨大なファヤが炎に包まれると火祭りは閉幕、これをもって本格的な春の訪れとなります。
