"Manhwa" ou "bande dessinée coréenne",
terme utilisé dès les années 1920 à partir des mots désignant "BD" au Japon "manga" et en Chine "lianhuanhua".
Le manhwa est un album en format poche ou semi-poche de 100 à 200 pages, se lisant de gauche à droite comme en France.
Largement influencée par la peinture traditionnelle d’Extrême-Orient, surtout chinoise, la BD coréenne présente généralement des traits épurés et légers.
Le manhwa aborde des thèmes plus proches de son histoire politique, économique, sociale et culturelle en décrivant par exemple la vie du petit peuple, la pauvreté des paysans contraints à l’exode (Lee Du-ho dans le milieu des années 80).
