Day 183: Food Memories

2010.07.02

Every Christmas, up until the year she died, my grandmother baked peanut butter cookies. Without fail, tin after tin of them awaited us every Christmas Eve. my grandmother was a terrible cook, we still joke about some of her god awful creations. But these cookies were to die for.

For the almost three years that she has been gone I have been trying in vain to recreate these cookies.. This week, desperately home sick, I finally caved and asked my mom for the recipe and tried to make them once again.

They were just like I remembered. Its funny how food can hold so many memories.

1 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup peanut butter
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Thoroughly cream shortening, sugars, eggs, and vanilla. Stir in peanut butter. Sift dry ingredients; stir into creamed mixture.

Drop by rounded teaspoons on ungreased cookie sheet. Press with back of floured fork to make crisscrosses.

Bake in moderate oven (350) about 10 minutes. Makes about 5 dozen cookies.

P.S. my grandmother was a babe.
