Reason to Design... #109:
"... TO FEEL IN CONTROL OF THE EFFECT OF TECHNOLOGIES"
Zoe Papadopoulou, from the Royal College of Art's Design Interactions MA Course, feels that by bringing together ideas about knitting and domestic artifacts, her project - Knitted Shields - challenges the assumption that technologies are taking over our lives, and that we can have no response. Her Knitted Shields, constructed in wool and bare copper wire become preventative devices for electrostatic discharge by grounding the objects they surround.
Zoe remembers that her Grandmother used to put her dinner in the microwave, press the button and then running out of the kitchen as quickly as possible. The Knitted Shield seem to be a reactionary design to this with Zoe saying, it is as much through the process of production as the protective qualities of the "cosies" themselves, that the knitter feels empowerment and control.
