Reason to Design... #112:

"...TO PUT THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT OUT OF A JOB"

"Last year there were 57,800 domestic fires in the UK, resulting in 376 deaths, 11,600 injuries, and costing an average of £25,300 per house hold, 60% of these originated in the kitchen."

This is the statement that the Aqua Hood is forged from. The Aqua hood is an extractor hood with an integrated fire suppression system that uses water mist technology to extinguish uncontrolled fires either on the hob or within the kitchen. The MA Industrial Design Engineering project group members of Aqua hood - JeungWoo Choi, Paul Thomas & Yusuf Muhammad - say water mist is ideal for the kitchen as it doesn't cause water damage; removes heat and displaces oxygen by evaporation to extinguish a fire. The Aqua hood is triggered off by heat detectors. The Aqua Hood, along with convincing video footage of prototypes, is shown at the 2008 Interim Show, Royal College of Art in London, UK.
