Reason to Design... #118:
"... TO LET THE USER RULE THE AIRWAVES"
In this year's (2008) Royal College of Art Design Products MA Interim Show Mikael Silvanto asks if we need a new radio when most of us carry and work with several devices such as phones or computers that already have radios. At the show Mikael reply to his question by stating that he wants to use technology to liberate old objects to a new physicality, promoting a joy of function. In the case of the radio on show here at the RCA 2008 Interim, he promotes act and accuracy of tuning. To reinforce this message, he uses a ruler with millimeter accurate scaling for tuning. What's more, to achieve this message, he says, "the concept is a radio-IN-a-scale instead of a scale in a radio, as the radio moves along the dial, not the dial along the radio!".
