An End Before a Beginning

You may ask, "Why this photo? Why start your year-long project with this odd, bland photo?"
Well because this was the day my project almost ended. Before it even started. I stepped out onto my deck to capture the last sunrise of 2011, slipped, fell and dropped my camera. I shattered my filter and I thought I had broken my Nikon. Luckily the camera and lens both still work.
So this is the shot my camera took when it hit the ground.
