At the castle esplanade there is a cast iron wall fountain.
It's a memorial for over three hundred women who were executed for witchcraft, and shows Hygiea (the goddess of health) and Aesculapius (the god of medicine) to acknowledge that not all witches work with evil intentions.
Edinburgh was once the capital of witch-burning Europe. In the 16th century more burnings were carried out on Castlehill than anywhere else in the country.
