The Strait of Gibraltar keeps the high maritime traffic with more than 90.000 ships crossing. The collisions with sperm whales, pigmy killer whale, and common beaked whale is going up unavoidable...
In the last few decades uncontrolled human development has had deplorable negative effects on the marine environment, causing a considerable reduction in the number of cetaceans travelling through these waters. One of the causes is the unavoidable passage of shipping through the zone of the Straits up to 300 vessels may cross the Sea of Alboran in a single day. On occasion, their hulls may collide with some of these creatures or their propellers may scrape over them, producing lesions in their dorsal fins, serious wounds or even death.
The Agreement on Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, Mediterranean and the contiguous Atlantic zone, an international organisation signed by 15 nations in 1996.
These regulations oblige vessels to reduce speed when they come within a radius of 200 metres of the whales and/or dolphins, that boats must keep a distance of at least 60 metres from the cetaceans’ location and cannot stay next to them for more than half an hour.
