Rishikesh (India) 1

2008.07.04
Part of a complex of temples, shrines, ashrams, yoga schools (the next shot captures the bottom right hand corner) (as always, these should be enlarged)

Ritual ablutions (which go on all day but especially at dawn and dusk)

riverside walk, past one of the countless chai shops (don't you just love the cow?)

balconies on an ashram

further south, another temple complex (note the statue of Lord Shiva in the river)

young boys gathering for the devotions which take place every evening

one of the hang-outs for Western riff-raff like myself

back at the temple for the evening's ceremonies

bikes all over the place — so much nicer than cars!

reverie

People seemed to enjoy the Simla photos (previous two posts) so I have dredged up some more images from my last visit to India. These are taken in Rishikesh, one of the seven holy cities on the Ganges River. Rishikesh is situated just where the holy river emerges from the mighty Himalayas on to the plains. It is a wondrous place: the air is always full of chanting, bells and incense; there are many temples, shrines, ashrams, yoga schools etc. Many pilgrims are constantly coming and going and it is also a popular spot with Western people (not the five star holiday set!). It is a very peaceful place once you get away from the main bazaar area. The whole town is completely vegetarian — this contributes to the very special vibrations there. This is the first of three sets on Rishikesh. Most of these are taken in the vicinity called Laxman Jhula. Hari Om!
PS. If you like looking at photos from India see also my posts on April 25, 2007, and on the following dates in 2008: Jan 31, Feb 1, Feb 7, as well as June 30 and July 1.

kangshung A sensational set Harry! #1 looks quite other-worldly - a wonderful image! Wouldn't mind being in that chai shop in #3 this evening. What a magnificent place - must get back.
