One day late but nevertheless....

The thing that I'd like to change is littering. It is a huge pet peeve of mine.

I was walking home from a meeting at the hospital and noticed the amount of garbage littering the side of the road. It really makes me furious when people are too lazy to put their garbage in the trash and so they just throw it on the ground, or maybe they happen to drop it and, rather than picking it back up, they just leave it there. It makes me mad when people disrespect others, the neighbourhood, the city, and the earth by throwing their garbage around and polluting.

Closely related to littering is vandalism and graffiti. Both are disrespectful to other people (not only the building owners but also everyone else who has to look at the ridiculous pictures) and both degrade the communities in which we live.

Sadly, there were too many examples to post from my mere 10 minute walk home but I've included many here.


You wouldn’t throw your cigarette butt on your living room floor and you wouldn’t scribble on your own walls (well, if you were over the age of 5 anyway, lol) so don’t do it in public.

I know that looking at pictures of trash isn't pretty but looking at trash on the side of the road in real life isn't pretty either.

p.s. after looking at a few other "something I'd like to change" posts I'm glad that some other people have focused on different aspects of waste, garbage, preserving the earth, etc. as well

This is exactly what I was thinking of the last couple of weeks during my walks to and from class. However, I never thought of it as something I could change. I guess I could change it if I actually picked it up and threw that trash away--how else can you change something like that? Ugly people with a lack of respect for others and their community will continue to do it, so how else can we make a difference? Note to self: take a trash bag with me to class tomorrow. I read a very interesting comment in the Key West newspaper this week. A tourist had complained about the litter on the street. Someone responded with "why didn't you pick it up"? THAT got me thinking! Next time I see a bag in the bushes or a cup on the sidewalk... I think I will! (pick it up) Perhaps someone will notice and do the same. It's a start! I live in the country...you wouldn't believe the trash that blows around into my yard from who knows where. I could (and sometimes do) fill a big bag every day. It's best to wear gloves to pick it all up. Some of it is pretty darned gross. I hate graffiti too. oldbabe · 2008-03-25: 19:54
