Jean Marie Tjibaou fought for his country, his land, his culture.
He fought for Kanaké.
Kanaké is one of the strongest archetype of kanak world. He is the ancestor, the first born. He is the arrow ridge tile, the central pillar, the shrine of the grand shanty. He is the Word from which Man exists.
Kanak means: Man. Kanaki is the land.

Cultural is vital, that's what gives taste to existence. We may create the most profitable economic systems, we are not robots to fully live from these systems . We exist with a human dimension, wich, no matter the most modern or sastisfying comfort, we're always an ensemble of needs and trancendence wich always wants to grow better, even become much more, become the other, and it's written in culture... (JM Tjibaou)

Meeting Kanak culture with the tradition, and the Mwakaa, was a great experience to me.
I hope I translated the words properly as they were in french....

Carley This is a fascinating set! M. Thibaou's words on culture are profound and very thought-provoking. I can see why it was a great experience! The photos are really interesting also. I like the parallel carved wood (don't know what they are) in the 3rd, the building design (all of them) and the incredible sunsets with the cultural center silhouetted. Brava!
