Salt of the earth.... Bonaire, 3rd day

2007.05.05

1- Looking for flamingoes, I found mountains of salt

2- The slave "houses", maisons d&#39esclaves (env 1m20 de haut)

3- A real pelican

4- In memory...

5- Baby flamingo (grey)

6- Coming back from Venezuela

7- The light purple water (in the back) is ready to get salt extracted

15- I was not the only one shooting the sunset

16- From my room, in the hotel, colors often get stronger after sunset

17- I had no time to go to the sea the morning following

I was exhausted but decided not rest and use the few hours off to have a look around. At first I wanted to see flamingos, I'd never seen any in my life, except on photos. So I was lucky enough to see a baby one and a few "adults" flying back from Venezuela....
But on my way, I could see the salt "factory" where african slaves used to work until 1863. Their little houses (you could not stand in them) were facing the sea, and I had to stop, think and honor them... The sun was going down, it was a peaceful evening...

Jen these are just gorgeous. Such a wonderful glimpse of your day. I'm happy you saw the flamingos you did. Also glad you shared with us the "slaves" houses. Things like this we should never forget. Treatment no brother or sister should ever endure. The sunsets are outstanding and I love the one composed inside your room. Brilliant ; )

i lost the keys to my rented suzuki in the surf not too far from the salt pans. i despaired at the thought of having to walk back to kralendijk. i wandered the dunes and found a rather, hmmm, portly german couple--a portly nude german couple--and coaxed them into giving me a ride into town.

your shots are perfect.

This set is, as carmitage said, unreal....absolutely stunning! The light & the sky are lovely in all..... I keep thinking about those slaves mining the salt, in houses that they couldn't stand up in.....horrible! No one should be treated like that! At least they had that beautiful ocean to look at. My favorites of all of these spectacularly beautiful shots, are the first pelican and "in memory" Thanks for this set!!

The photos are magnificent, as are the colours. I agree with Carley. It's sad to think of the African slaves mining the salt. Of course it's sad to think of anyone being forced into servitude. thank you for your descriptions.
