Camp de la transportation....

2007.06.27

Can't tell if "transportation camp" is the right translation for it....
It was a prison, a labor camp...
St laurent du Maroni, French Guyana, was a penitenciary town until second world war, and many prisoners had to pass by the camp....
It was built in 1854. During 90 years, 50 to 70.000 prisoners passed by there. They would be sent to other prisons or stay there, coming from Guyana but also many from France...
4 to 5.000 prisoners for 250 guards...

miclaud Belles images d'une histoire pourtant très difficile à accepter...

jameswaters The second to last one, that's a great sculpture... and your capturing a man in the background, free to look out over the water gives it poignant contrast!

My favorite shot though is the 4th, of a large portal... i love the lighting and colors, the texture!

elkegrocholl This awful history reminds me very much of the concentration camps in Germany. A memorial for us and our children! This makes me very sad. !!!
