The waterfall your friends are under is a creek heated from thermals. They put a fun little chute to carry the water to the other side so people can bath in it; last time I was there a woman was washing her baby daughters hair at that spot. Swimming back to the right the water gets deep quickly, where you can't usually touch the bottom, but it is a really pretty and special place. This spot is also the beginning of a hiking trail that goes all the way up to boiling lake, a lake that is actually boiling in its center from geothermal heat waaay below... so no swimming!
