childhood memories 3: Schweitzer Elementary School

2008.03.31
This is the main office. Looks like today is the last day of spring break. who starts school on april fools? could you just imagine all the kids coming in, sitting down, and then when the first bell rings all the teachers shouting "april fools!"

I doubt that they still do this since the number of students is considerably larger than when I was going to school here, but every Friday we would gather around the flagpole, watch the flag being raised and say the pledge of allegiance. Once a month the principle would also hand out awards like perfect attendance and student of the month and stuff like that here as well.

The kindergarten playground. There used to be a huge tree where that little tree is now. I wonder why they cut it down. The old slide is still there. If you look in the upper left corner of the playground you can just barely see some bushes. I don't remember who started it but one day a bunch of girls (including me) got together and dug a shallow hole beneath that bush and then pushed all the boys we didn't like into it. I still don't know why we did it and of course we got into a lot of trouble for doing it.

I ate lunch here all the time!

I can't believe this school has hardly changed except for newer signs and some paint.

This is the cafeteria/multipurpose room. Every Friday they used to sell popcorn, ice cream bars or my absolute favorite, ice milk, from that door on the far right. Since they never had enough and always ran out, as soon as the bell rang at the end of the day everyone would race down the hallway to try and be one of the first few in line.

Not much changed here either except the murals they painted and the new jungle gym, which is in the same location as the old one. There is also a fence separating the school yard from the park. It used to be just one huge green lawn. I guess that's the sign of changing times. They probably don't want any weirdos coming onto school grounds when kids are there.

The hop-scotch and four square boxes are still there too. Nice to see that kid's schoolground games haven't changed much either. : )

I know one of these rooms was my classroom but I just can't remember which!

oldbabe What a great stroll down memory lane...was it all that long ago for you? I find it interesting you had picnic tables outside for lunch. I guess you have nice weather all year around. And, hopscotch...nice to know that is still played. Did you play jacks? Now, that's one game I loved!

chasingthoughts I used to go back and visit my old schools and teachers all the time... I have not done that in a long time and would love to go back. I cannot believe you dug a hole and pushed boys in! Sometimes, I wish I could do that ;)

redzwan I remember those times. But sadly, all my schools (from elementary, junior high, up to college) don't exist anymore. All closed down.
