childhood memories 5: a plague of biblical proportions!

2008.04.16
that's the school yard to the left of the picture

I'm kind of embarrassed to say that my friends and I used to play in this ditch - my brother thought that was so disgusting - we would catch tadpoles and stuff.

i can't remember how we got down in there, though, there are high fences everywhere. Maybe they weren't so high up back then or I was just a real tomboy and was climbing fences and stuff.

the sidewalk and street that was covered in smashed frogs

Ok, so that is obviously an exaggeration but it was probably the strangest thing that ever happened when I was in elementary school and I don't think I will ever forget it.

As you can see in the first picture, there is another one of those flood control channels that went right alongside our school yard (these things are everywhere!). One spring, I don't remember what grade I was in, we went out to the playground for recess and saw the yard COVERED in a swarm of tiny little baby frogs, they were probably only about an inch across. There were so many little frogs that the street and sidewalk were covered with squished frogs that had gotten run over by cars and bikes and people. It was the strangest thing that ever happened and it only happened that one time and never again (as far as I know).

dhulsmeyer i've heard of it raining frogs before. it would be flippin amazing to see in person though. you've been pretty nostalgic of late. i get that way but i don't like it. it makes me feel sappy.

davidcardona Great work you`re doing there! It´s great to come back and to have works to show over words to say. Your facts will determine the possible changes in the reality. You have this work, you have too more than words! You´re right dear and gentle lady. Go On dear fighter!

oldbabe What year was that? It would be fun to find old newspapers to see if there was mention of it!

And you would be embarrassed to say you played in the ditch, why??? I used to think that was great fun, and mud pies, and houses in the woods...
