The Bardo Museum in Tunis has one of the finest collections of Roman mosaics. Room after room is filled with large, almost intact, floor and wall decorations depicting Roman gods and mythologies, the seasons, social activities etc. It's almost too overwhelming to take it all in.
There are some pieces though, that at first you might overlook. Tiny details that add that something extra to the work.
This detail is taken from a mosaic depicting Theseus killing the minotaur. The head obviously isn't the minotaurs, nor is it Theseus', but it shows the head of one of the minotaur's unlucky victims.
It's basic in its construction, and almost seems a throwaway detail, but so fascinating in its simplicity.
