Múa rối nước

Meaning "puppets that dance on water", Vietnamese Water Puppets are most traditionally found in Northern Vietnam. Hanoi has a big water puppet theatre near Hoan Kiem Lake and is extremely popular.
Good reason too, I'm not a fan of puppets at all but these are fantastic. The theatre is small and the performance area is a shallow indoor pool. The puppets are controlled by the puppeteers who are hidden behind a curtain. The stories they tell are similar in all variations of performance - local tales of farmers and foxes, dragons and unicorns, the thanksgiving harvest etc, but they are so charming and so cleverly inventive that you forget to watch to see how it's done, you just watch.

Needless to say that souvenir puppets are on sale all over the place. This was just a small section of the puppets for sale in one shop...
