The first shot is really beautiful even with a football. But yes, sport and money dominates most things and a football on the Eiffel tower is most disappointing. (And the French will be disappointed they did not win the Rugby World cup.)

It almost looks like it laid an egg! Don't they know they are messing with our photo opportunities. Almost the same thing happened to me yesterday, I went to take photos of Union Station and I couldn't because they were filming a movie.

Yes, it was a rugby ball as there was the Rugby World Cup a few weeks ago in France...Sorry it happened when you visited Paris. Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to go back.
