Vegemite is considered as much a part of Australia's heritage as kangaroos and Holden cars. Australian children are brought up on Vegemite from the time they're babies. It is said that Australians are known to travel all over the world with at least one small jar of Vegemite in their luggage, for fear that they will not be able to find it overseas.

Vegemite is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract (a by-product of beer manufacture) and various vegetable and spice additives. It is very dark reddish-brown, almost black, in color, and one of the richest sources known of Vitamin B. It's thick like peanut butter, it's very salty, and it tastes best on toast or as a vegemite sandwich.

Classic Aussie jingle

We're happy little Vegemites, as bright as bright can be,
We all enjoy our Vegemite for breakfast, lunch and tea,
Our mummies say we're growing stronger every single week,
Because we love our Vegemite,
We all adore our Vegemite,
It puts a rose in every cheek.

Happy Australia Day!

davids Sorry, this stuff is so distinctive that I think you either love it or hate it and I'm afraid that I hate it - yuck! Swap you for a pint of VB!

Have a great Australia Day.

Maxine I love vegemite even if it tastes like used car oil. I even got to eat some when I was on an under '35s tour of Europe back in '84. Somebody had brought some along in their luggage. It was like gold!!! (Don't the Americans own it now? Grrrr.) I think I'll go and have some on toast right now, just to celebrate Aussie Day. Happy Aussie Day!

DancingDolphin ha ha.... I first heard about this when my Aussie relatives came over years ago. They were like, "where's the Vegemite?"... the WHAT? So this was a fun reminder.

mclps I'm afraid I'm one of the ones that does not like it very much. But it did remind me of the time I worked with a guy from Australia, and yes, he did carry a jar of vegemite with him. Happy Australia Day!

youlookmahvelous Ha, I have a coworker whom I adore from Australia and I can't wait to quiz and tease her on Monday about Vegamite, which I first heard of from the song I come from the land down under by Men at Work.
youlookmahvelous · 2008-01-26: 22:04

LotoFoto I've always wondered what Vegemite was!
LotoFoto · 2008-01-28: 00:57
jaimolly Great set of photos.

Also, I travelled overseas and took a small jar of vegemite with me, which was handy because no other country sells it.

(I eat mine on pancakes)
