P365_78 Menai Straits Monuments
Working on the island of Anglesey today.
Went down to the foreshore by the site of the formal naval training school HMS Indefatigable where the sail training ship HMS Conwy was based until it sank in the Menai Straits.
Being a naval training facility, there is a monument in memory of Admiral Nelson and those that fell at the Battle of Trafalgar 1805.
The backdrop to this spectacular monument is the Britannia Bridge, joining the mainland to the island of Anglesey and designed by Robert Stephenson.
Originally built to carry the railway, it was modified in the 1970's to carry the upper highway deck.
The bridge has been rebuilt as it was originally a tubular or box structure, set alight by two youths one Sunday afternoon when they were playing in the bridge!
