My Lame-o attempts at Avian Photography

Flight. Cropped. First of all I must say that I was going to pack my D300 body. That would have made my 70-300VR zoom, a 105mm - 450mm. Had I only known... But I was already packing two camera bags of gear with my D700, lenses, and my medium format gear so I left the D300 behind. Shame on me.

Well I travelled down to the islands off the coast of Virginia. Man was the wind howling. If you live in the Northeast you know what I'm talking about. It was a regular blow of about 25-30mph, with some serious gusts to over 50mph ALL DAY LONG. I could not use my tripod. Period. Regardless of how steady the manufacturer claims it to be, I felt it would have been blown over with my expensive camera going along for the ride. I had travelled down there to shoot not only some "gallery" style images, but also stock. Looks like stock won out -- as I was unable to really find anything terrific in the howling wind and cold. I'll head back down again before the tourist hordes ascend on the islands but for now, here is my lame attempt at bird photography.

Well you can call them lame...but beauty in in the eye of the beholder and I love #1...who knows about the technical arguments but for me it is the essence of a bird in flight

Don't sweat it. In this kind of photography, unless you're really hooked, I think the capture is more fun than the result, and it looks like you had fun.

We had the wind here on the South Shore area of Boston, too . . .downright miserable being out in it. I like the golden hue and composition of shot 4.
