Puna - Argentina's NW

2007.11.29
40 km from Humahuaca, lies the Serrania del Hornocal. This is a part of the country which is unknwown to its inhabitants.

This road, climbs from 2000 mts to 4200 in less than 50 km, from Purmamarca to the Salinas Grandes, in Jujuy.

Los Colorados, behind Purmamarca, in Jujuy

This is a salty pond, located at 4000 mts. above sea level, close to Sey.

Flock of llamas close to Abdon Castro Tolay, a remote town of the Puna

Viaducto de la Polvorilla, part of the Tren a las Nubes (train to the clouds) the highest train ride in the Western Hemisphere

The eastern part of the NW is a sub-tropical rain forest. Sometimes, the rivers are unsurpassable obstacles

Our guide, from the jungle to the Puna. As you can see, we are above the clouds!

One of the few inhabitants of Santa Ana, who faced and smiled at us, when we asked if we could take her picture

Coming back down from the Puna to the Yungas, walking part of the Inca trail

NW Argentina is a land of contrasts. Its Eastern area is a sub-tropical forest, and its west, is a large plateau which extends into Chile, Bolivia and Peru's altiplano. These plateaus are usuallly over 3000 mts. above sea level, with very low rainfall.
