Hunting Emperor Dragonfly

2007.06.04

This photo was taken with my new Sigma 135-400mm (270-800mm in terms of 35mm film) f4.5-5.6 tele-zoom. The blue dragonfly is the largest here in Valencia and patrol an area, back and forth, but its course is unpredictable. Any competition from other dragonflies is viciously dealt with. I tried first to use a monopod, but soon changed to handheld despite the size and weight of the lens.

Focal length 400mm, ISO 400, 1/800 f7.1 with exposure compensation -1.0 due to the dark background. Autofocus set to continuous auto.

Macros of dragonflies: Happy dragonfly and Laughing dragonfly.

Carley gorgeous shot! The lighting and composition are superb. I'm a little sorry and disillusioned to hear about the vicious proclivities of the dragonfly.....I've always seen them as something gossamer and magical.....and very benign

davids I don't know how you managed to get such a clear shot handholding - you must have steady hands. Well done.
