A blue male damselfly holds on to the head of the female brown damselfly, while she brings her genital aperture up to his reproductive organs. The male has hooks and brushes on his penis and will use them to clean out sperm from other males before releasing his sperm. Many dragonflies do the same (except they form a circle) and the cleanout can be more than 90% effective with some species.
When they have finished, depending on the species, he may still hold on to her head to keep other males from her until she has laid the eggs.
