Valley City, North Dakota

2008.04.01
Valley City was founded in 1872 with the name of Second Crossing of the Sheyenne when the Northern Pacific railroad crossed the river here. When a town is built around a winding river, bridges become very necessary.

Looking over Valley City, Hi-Line bridge in the background.

The original line of the Northern Pacific Railroad descended from the east, crossed the Sheyenne River at Valley City over a low bridge, and climbed out of the valley to the west. Because of the depth of the valley, the grades on either side of the river were severe. To avoid these severe grades, the new or "High Line" was built one mile upstream.

A glimpse of the Sheyenne River Valley.

At 3,860 feet long and 162 feet above the river bed, the Highline Bridge is one of the longest and highest single-track railroad bridges in the nation.

The city is known for its many bridges over the Sheyenne River including the Hi-Line Railroad Bridge. These bridges have earned it the distinction of being called the "City of Bridges".

CJLata Wonderful photos again, spectacular views, great info. Have you ever heard of the Kinzua Bridge in PA. It was one of the longest Railroad bridges in the country too. Some of it was messed up by a tornado in 2003. All those years it sat there for people to walk across and enjoy the tops of the trees below, especially in the Fall. There is not a state that compares to Pennsylvania when it comes to Fall.
