A wide angle shot at the onset of totality. I wanted to get the Orion constellation in there as well.

The lunar eclipse occurred last night, during the winter solstice. This rare event hasn't happened since 1638! This is also the first total lunar eclipse since February 2008.

I wasn't exactly sure how to photograph it, though I'd read several articles that gave greatly varying information. So I guestimated. Not too shabby.

In Arkansas, we had a thin layer of clouds that created a lot of halo/haze around the moon, so the eclipsed/dark section of the moon isn't clearly defined throughout the stages. And the red color wasn't as vibrant pre-totality. But once it went into totality, the moon glowed an amazing deep red. It was well worth staying up to witness and document.

ILike2Photo John, you definitely messed up. This is by far your best of 2010! Dang...really, dang! All we had out here was a hazy, foggy moon.

lgnelson Outstanding work, John!! We have to talk about how you did the first one - I think I know, but I don't know how you got it so good with one attempt! (Unless Photoshop helped combine several shots). Nice!!
