36 freshly sharpened pencils--all ready for the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test!

We had TAKS #1 today--two more in April. These tests are the most important thing to them--it determines whether they pass a grade! It also determines which schools are better than others. If you're REALLY good, you get to hang up a banner on the building for all to see :/

"The solution that TAKS offers is simply another installment in the exhausted effort to compel teachers to produce well-educated students. Ironically, teachers are robbed of creative control of their classrooms and end up forced to teach only what a testing board deems necessary for proper social functioning. Teachers should be freed from the restrictions of testing and be allowed to embrace the talents of their students, which cannot be measured by a multiple choice exam."

I could go on and on about these tests.

I wish there was a better system than standardized testing!

The theme was "Classroom Rants".....right?

Monetvalley Sounds like what Arizona has in store for our youths...more standardized testing. Great close up shot of the freshly-sharpened pencils.

fishbud oh yeah...the annual TAKS Attack Week. In my days, it was called TASS...then they promoted the Pass the TASS. I'm not sure if I like either one really :p

bamommy Great shot! It's funny that you posted this today. I was just talking with my daughter's teacher and we were both complaining about No Child Left Behind.

Symbioticromance Oh gosh I couldn't agree with you more on the subject of standardized testing! That is just like CRCT tests here in GA and I really dislike those darn things & the way it effects what a teacher does in their own classroom. I feel you on the rant, haha

But anyway, this is a great shot!

focussed Im in total agreement with everything you've said....and of course..lets not forget where the blame gets laid when students don't perform so well on the tests.....it's all the teachers fault.....such pressure for both students and teachers.....not the ideal environment for encouraging independent creative thinkers is it?! Love the shot!

lexlevans haha i think more teachers can agree about the whole standardized testing issue and 'teaching for the test'. i think it's ridiculous - and i hated it as a student too!! :-) so there's my rant too.

Beagles3 Great shot of the pencils! Love it!

I agree on the testing hassles going on these days with schools. Here is California we have rediculous amounts of standardized testing going on from now through the end of April. If the teachers don't teach to the test to make sure the student's perform then the state takes away funding which makes it even harder to get the results they want. Doesn't make sense to me.

And now we have a huge budget crisis at the state level. School districts are suffering from budget cuts up to 17 million dollars in some districts! The districts are handing out lay-of notices, cutting programs like ART, MUSIC and SPORTS!! We also have a 1 to 20 ratio for K-3 grades and now that may go away as well! It all really sucks!

But, the prisons systems are still fully funded!
*jumps down from her soapbox*

mclps Amen!!!!! I agree with everything everyone above has said about the ridiculousness of standardized testing and the negative effects on students, teachers and teaching. Here in New York, we just ended three days of State Math Testing. (We completed ELA in January) Can you imagine? A test you take in January and March will determine whether or not you move on to the next grade in September. It's a good thing we have "business people" running our school system! (sorry about the sarcasm). It does suck!
