A Few Seriously Big Mountains - Nepal

2008.01.11
Angkawa Danda Range from near Taksindu

Ngothung Ri near Surke

Shar from Namche Bazaar

Kantega (The Saddle) from Pangboche

The razor sharp ridges of Thamserka - from Pangboche

Kantega from Pheriche

Thamserka from near Pheriche

Lhotse on left and Ama Dablam

Summit of Ama Dablam showing the 'pearl' (dablam) or perennial hanging glacier.

Summit of Everest on left with Lhotse on right. Most of Everest is obscured by the ridge running from Lhotse to Nuptse.

Time to look at some of the seriously big mountains on the Everest Trek in Nepal.

Also to acknowledge the achievements of Sir Edmund Hillary the New Zealander who, with SherpaTenzing Norgay, was the first to climb Everest - and who died yesterday. Hillary is venerated by the Sherpa people of the Khumbu region for the immense amount of work he has done in building schools, hospitals and bridges here.

For a whole set of Ama Dablam, probably the most awe inspiring mountain in the Khumbu, see my previous page.

See also my friend jagungal's page for some mountain shots of the Annapurna region

Nikon D200 with 18-200 VR lens.

pattyb Brilliant photos Richard, I can't see how you remember all the names though!

Wonderful tribute to an amazing man who made a difference in life. Such a true adventurer, I still cannot believe that I have trekked the same trails that he once did.

I love the saddle and the pearl..

eljapa Too bad for Sir Edmund Hillary atleast he got to be 88. You are a lucky guy indeed to be able to watch these wonders of the world.
Its hard to get an idea how tall these mountains are but it must be an impressive sight.
eljapa · 2008-01-11: 14:43
Maxine I was about to say what pattyb said - How do you remember all those names?? When I went to Nepal people pointed out "There's such and such a mountain". I could never work out which one they were talking about due to so many mountain peaks. I was sad to hear about Sir Edmund's passing yesterday. Oh, BTW: Your photos are G-R-E-A-T!
