More Pokhara - Nepal

A statue of Shiva in our hotel garden.

This small island on Phewa Lake is an important Hindu pilgrimage site and has a temple among the trees.

A somewhat over-loaded boat heading out on Phewa Lake!

White pointsettia and butterfly.

These fruit juices are delicious!

A Sadhu, or Holy Man, making his rounds. He did agree to this photo! My apologies for the burnt out highlights.

Manjushri - the wisdom aspect of the Buddha. This is an important image in the practice of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism, and images such as this are extremely beautiful works of art. Manjushri cuts through ignorance using his sword based on wisdom represented here by the text supported by the lotus in his left hand. The gold in this painting is real - it is dissolved in the paint. However such thankas cost just a couple of hundred dollars, apart from the fact that they take the painter about 6 to 8 weeks to complete. Our friend Summer Lama is one of the best, and was the painter of this one - he and his family are completely dependant on the sale of his art. He can be contacted by email at: lamasummer@hotmail.com or jibanlama@yahoo.com

The entrance to the King's Palace, Pokhara.

Mt Machapuchare - or 'fishtail'. This shot was taken from Sarangkot, the hill behind Pokhara where the paragliders launch. Machapuchare is called 'fishtail' because its summit does look like a fishtail - it has two summits. These are not evident from the south where this shot was taken from - you need to view it from the east or west to see the fishtail. Machapuchare, 6993 m or 22,943 feet, is a sacred mountain and cannot be climbed (legally). Many regard it as the most beautiful of all mountains - I think I agree with them.

For a bit of information about where Pokhara is in Nepal, see my previous post. It is a very nice place to spend a few days.

losalamos666 Richard. Love the colours and really love the people shots. The photo star in #8 especially!

rolpa Another top set, Richard! #3, #4 and #7 are immediate favs but when I look again I'll probably choose some more! Good exposure on the sadhu's face in #8. Did it require much postprocessiing? With these beautiful portfolios you might drum up a bit of business for the locals. Exquisite Manjushri.

photopoet Thank you for sharing aspects of your trip. Your words add to the enjoyment. I especially liked the Holy Man standing in front of the stores with English names. The juxtaposition is jarring—but also reflects the world.

DancingDolphin Great set, I love the shot of the woman making juice. Such wonderful colors, all!

MHJphotos Wonderful shots Richard! I really like #2 because of the amazing lighting and composition, and #3 because that IS a ton of people in that boat!

The Holy man, blown highlights and all, is a great shot! I especially like the sign on the building behind him "Photo Star". Very cool timing!

And Fishtail mountain ... hey I love anything to do with fish!

pattyb I love the colors and life in #4. Also the Thanka, #9 is outstanding. I can't believe the talent of Summer Lama. His kindness overwhelmed me.

Wonderful series from Pokhara.

sunshineand you had many new sights

jagungal A very even and consistent series Rich; nicely done. Let's hope the Manjusri shot might help generate some business for Sumer. #2 is better enlarged — it might have been good to get a bit more of the shore in the foreground. #3 & #7 would be my picks.
