Green Cape Lighthouse

2008.01.30

If you enlarge and look closely, you can see the newer automated steel lattice skeleton tower with a solar powered light, among other things.

The distinctive double-curved gunmetal handrail and the corbels that support the wide gallery - the 'signature' features of a Barnet designed lighthouse.

The Green Cape Lighthouse was built in 1883 and was the first cast concrete lighthouse tower in Australia. At 29 metres it is the state's second tallest light. It is situated on a point of land projecting from Ben Boyd National Park. It is the southernmost lighthouse in New South Wales.

Designed by James Barnet, colonial architect for NSW 1865-90. Barnet played a major role in the construction of several other NSW lighthouses - his 'signature' features are the distinctive double-curved gunmetal handrail and the corbels that support the wide gallery, all of which are fashioned in bluestone. He was influenced by 'Classicism' and the Italian Renaissance period, which created an architectural style more European than English.

A first order, revolving dioptric holophotal Fresnel prism was installed, and a four-wick kerosene-burning lamp emitted a light with an intensity of 100,000 candlepower, which was visible for 19 nautical miles (35 km). The original character of the light was one flash every 50 seconds (a modern car headlight on full beam is about 80,000 candelas).

People can stay in the nearby beautiful keeper’s house, also designed by James Barnet, for a nominal fee.

jagungal Hey Rich, this is a wonderful set. I just love the semi-abstract quality of most of these shots, my favourites being 3, 7 & 10 — the last being a screamer. I don't much go in for phallic symbols — as Freud himself said, "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar". But you'd have to wonder about #1?? There is something of real visual interest in every shot, and they cohere to make a real set. Nice!

KicsiAngyalka wooow! I love lighthouses. It always represents for me a place where I can take a rest and get energized with the see and the sky. Great images! Thanks for sharing! :)

Cherax Nicely observed detail. I like the line of cloud behind the tower in #1.
Not sure if it was Barnet, but the builder who won the job of building this ran into terrible troubles, and subsequently committed suicide.

For a great read, I highly recommend the story of the Bell Rock lighthouse in the Engineering Wonders of the World book, based on the TV series.

rolpa These are great. For one thing, the IQ is outstanding throughout. Also, you've beautifully captured aspects of the whole from the magnifcent macros structure of #1, the mid-size stairs of #7, down to the cogs and even a door handle. Gives a wonderful sense of the place. Even the vast surrounds are hinted at in the reflections and glimpses through window and door. Top set!

jet28 Fabulous set! I love glimpses through doors and windows - the rest aren't bad either ;-)

pattyb After reading some of these comments I'll never be able to look at a lighthouse the same!! Sheepishly I'll just say I've never seen one up close before and have always found them quite attractive.

I can't believe you got to go inside, what a treat!! Excellent shots Richard. I love #1 and #3.

As for #6, I thought I was looking at a "newer automated steel lattice skeleton tower with a solar powered light!" (not) ; ))

#10 is wild!!
