The Tharwa Bridge

2008.07.01

Tharwa Bridge is a lovely old four span Allan Truss bridge which provides a high-level crossing point across the Murrumbidgee River, south-west of Canberra. It provides access to the village of Tharwa and to Namadgi National Park and the bush beyond. It is the oldest surviving bridge in the Australian Capital Territory and was opened on 27 March 1895.

The bridge was closed in 2006 due to termite infestation of its main structural elements which are essentially timber. Plans were made to scrap the bridge and build a new one, but following significant community outcry it was decided to spend the $15 million to repair the original whose heritage values have now been recognised.

Although a 10 foot hole was burnt in the bridge earlier this week as a result of questionable work practices by the repair crew, it is still planned to re-open in August this year.

vollenda It's a great study, Richard. #2 and #6 are my favorites. I'm glad it was saved!

jagungal Interesting post Rich! I like #6 best as a bridge shot, and also really like #4 as a composition. I love the country around Tharwa.
