How to build a log cabin

2009.03.22
Timber selection - this is Australian mountain ash. Obviously the straighter the better - lasts forever if kept off the ground.

Cutting a corner joint from a log - using a traditional long saw. This will be a lower log.

Trimming with the adze.

The adze is kept very sharp - one has to be careful not to hit one's feet with it.

The finished lower log ready to accept the upper log.

Cutting the upper log.

Finished upper log.

Corner joint connected. There are lots of ways to do log cabin corner joints, but this one is best for allowing moisture to drain away from the joint.

This is Ewe - master craftsman in traditional tools, and instructor.

What they look like when finished - this log cabin is about 70 years old and is just outside Khancoban.

I spent the past few days at a timber skills workshop at Khancoban for people involved in conserving timber huts and cabins in Australia's high country. Its main focus was on the correct uses of traditional wood-working tools and selection of the best timbers for particular purposes. It was a rare occasion to learn from the few remaining expert craftsmen skilled in these matters.

It was presented by the Australian Alps National Parks and was an absolutely sensational experience!
